The Dot

The purpose of the Dot is to help the user experience this moment of stillness that only happens after some form of meditation. There is a camera that detects the movement of the user and analyzes whether the user has moved or not. If the participant successfully focuses on the dot for an extended period of time in stillness, the dot on the screen will suddenly grow. The dot will help the user not only stay focused on the task of meditation at hand, but also encourage the user to experience this moment of tranquility that is often hard to find in everyday life.

The Systems Model of Creativity

reference : http://www.cultural-science.org/journal/index.php/culturalscience/article/viewArticle/11/48

The systems model, briefly explained here, holds that a confluence of factors, in this case those associated with a field, domain and an individual, must converge in order for creativity to result.

Figure 1: The Systems Model of Creativity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1999: 315)
The system has circular causality meaning that the process doesn’t start through the instigation of one component alone but could be instigated at any point in the system. It is then necessary for each element in the system to play its part. The domain, or symbol system used by the field, provides the cultural terrain against which the introduction of novelty occurs. It is the field, the social organisation that understands the knowledge system, that makes decisions about whether a novel re-arrangement of the symbol system is to be included in the domain. The individual, who has a particular personal background, must acquire the domain information prior to and during their use of it, as well as be socialised into the operations of the field. Bourdieu’s concept of habitus is also useful in its application to this latter aspect of the systems model and his use of the term field as an arena of social contestation was used to amplify the similar concept used by Csikszentmihalyi. The concept of field of works also augmented that of the domain as a knowledge system identifiable in its accumulated artefacts. With these constructs in mind the overall research study was designed to see whether there was any evidence within contemporary western popular music to support this model’s existence.

The Kitsch in Korea

In Korea, middle of 1990’, several designers started to discuss “The Kitsch” because Korean design was changing gradually by effects of Japanese culture. Most Korean teenagers preferred to read Japanese magazines and cartoons at that time. Japanese culture was a main trend in Korea. The bright colors, old fashion styles, and humorous Kitsch design icons in magazines and cartoons were every popular among teenager. In this period, Japanese design also copied and recreated from western design for example “Rolling Stone” in USA and “The Face” magazine in England. The Japanese Kitsch design directly affected variety Korean products such as notes, t-shirts, and magazines. Moreover, some Korean designer started to create Koreanized Kitsch designs. One Korean designer made very funny Kitsch design which was new version illustration using an old elementary school book. He used illustrations which were in old elementary school books and added funny and humorous caption. It was very successful and many design followed this design style. They chose theme images from 1950’s to 1970’s and reproduced that to modern style. The Kitsch design was a main code of Korean culture until late of 1990’s.
